Addressing 5 Common Misconceptions About Rhinoplasties
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a common cosmetic surgery performed more than 350,000 times in the U.S. annually. Yet, despite being one of the most popular cosmetic procedures individuals actively seek out, the surgery continues to be surrounded by a handful of misconceptions.
Matthew Kaufman, MD, FACS, a surgeon with The Plastic Surgery Center, shares, “Many people come in with false concerns about what a nose job is or isn’t going to do for them.”
Misconception #1: Rhinoplasty Procedures are Only for Women
Although 82% of all rhinoplasties in the U.S. are performed on women, anyone can get a rhinoplasty – in fact, an experienced surgeon can tailor the procedure to accommodate the cosmetic and functional goals of every patient, regardless of gender.
Misconception #2: Nose Jobs Are Noticeable and Look Fake
Today, skilled surgeons aim to enhance the nose to complement the patient’s facial features, resulting in subtle, natural-looking outcomes. They assess a patient’s natural facial shape and proportions and then use this information to make very small, precise surgical adjustments that enhance the patient’s natural look without drawing attention to the change.
“Advancements in surgical precision and technique have significantly improved the naturalness of rhinoplasty results,” affirms Dr. Kaufman.
Misconception #3: A Nose Job Causes Long-Term Breathing Problems
Another common misconception is that rhinoplasties cause longer-term breathing problems. While some patients may experience temporary nasal congestion after surgery, this resolves on its own as healing progresses.
When conducted by an experienced and skilled surgeon, rhinoplasty should not result in chronic long-term breathing difficulties. In fact, many patients find that their breathing improves after a rhinoplasty. This is often because rhinoplasty can also address structural issues or birth defects, such as a deviated septum, allowing air to flow more freely through the nose.
Misconception #4: Nose Job Recovery is Painful
Immediately after surgery, patients can generally expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and eyes. As a result, breathing through the nose may also be difficult initially.
However, while some discomfort is expected after the procedure, Dr. Kaufman reassures patients that any rhinoplasty pain is generally well-managed with pain medication. For most, any discomfort is tolerable and subsides within 1-2 weeks.
Misconception #5: Nose Jobs Are an Expensive Procedure
Most surgical procedures can be costly and often vary widely depending on factors such as the complexity of the procedure, the surgeon’s expertise, and geographical location.
While rhinoplasty can be costly, many patients find the benefits—both aesthetic and functional—worth the investment. For medical necessities most insurance providers cover a rhinoplasty procedure, like difficulty breathing caused by a deviated septum.
