Botox Isn’t Only For Wrinkle Prevention!

Author:

November is Hyperhidrosis Awareness Month! Hyperhidrosis is a chronic condition that causes a person to sweat excessively and unpredictably. The sweat can occur in usual places (i.e., armpits), but can also commonly occur in the hands, feet, and other areas. Those experiencing Hyperhidrosis sweat even without exercise and in colder temperatures. People living with this condition are burdened by sweating at inconvenient times, and their social and professional lives are often affected. Hyperhidrosis can be embarrassing and many patients experiencing it fail to seek a medical solution. When left untreated, this condition can continue throughout life.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is mainly caused by a firing issue with the nerves that tell your body to cool itself down. The nerves that control your sweat glands are overactive, sending signals even when the body is not overheating. Another type of Hyperhidrosis, called secondary Hyperhidrosis, can be caused by other medical issues, such as diabetes, certain types of cancer, nervous system disorders, and thyroid issues.

 How is Hyperhidrosis treated?

Don’t Sweat It! Our team of plastic surgeons have seen great success when treating hyperhidrosis with Botox. Botox (botulinum toxin) is a neurotoxin that temporarily freezes the muscles in a certain area. These injections temporarily block the nerve that signals the sweat glands in a specific area of the body. The results of this treatment often last about 6 months, however duration of symptom relief may vary between patients. Botox treatments have been shown to be effective in treating hyperhidrosis and are FDA approved.
