Mommy Makeover- What’s Right for Me?

Author:

Mommy Makeovers have exceedingly grown in popularity over the last decade. Many women, including celebrities, have spoken openly about their positive experience with this cosmetic surgery. Dr. Bianca Molina, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon based in Bergen County, NJ, treats many women who can’t seem to achieve their ideal body through diet and exercise following pregnancy.

Q: What is a Mommy Makeover?

A: The term, “Mommy Makeover” is everywhere and can be used to describe surgery of the breasts, belly, and other problem areas after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Oftentimes after pregnancy, the female body does not go back to the way it was before, which is normal! Some women have less than favorable changes to their breasts, such as sagging, deflation, and changes in the size of the nipple areolar complex. Other women suffer from weak abdominal muscles, stretching of the skin, and overall loss of shape in this region. Many women have both! A Mommy Makeover is designed to address any or all of the problem areas a mom might have.

Q: What are the general concerns most women have? What procedures do you see it entail most frequently?

A: Tummy tuck and breast lift (with or without implants) are the most common surgeries done to address changes that have occurred during pregnancy and afterwards. Another procedure that is commonly requested is liposuction, which addresses extra stubborn, localized fatty tissue.

Q: How do you help patients decide which procedures may be right for them?

A: Patients should think about what their problem areas are and what their goals might be with surgery. At the time of consultation, I listen to patient’s goals and wishes, perform a detailed exam, and then discuss the possibilities to come up with a plan together.

Q: How long following pregnancy should a woman come in for a mommy makeover?

A: The female body does amazing things! It is hard to believe that your body alone can grow and nurture a human, and your body goes through so many changes! I recommend waiting at least 6-9 months after you are done with pregnancy and childbearing to undergo any surgical procedures. If you are still breast-feeding, your breasts are changing and will continue to change even a few months after you stop, so I recommend waiting 6 months after this period, too. Once your body is back at a steady state, we can work together to look at areas you might want to address.

Q: What are the risks and benefits of a Mommy Makeover? Is it safe to have a combination of procedures?

A: The risks and benefits of Mommy Makeover surgeries are the same as any surgical procedure. Safety is always our top priority for any surgical procedure, and the risk profile is tailored to each individual. Combination procedures are oftentimes safe, but we always consider each individual patient on a case-by-case basis.

Q: What is recovery like with these procedures?

A: Mommy Makeover surgery is typically done in the outpatient setting, and patients can go home from the recovery room after surgery. Patients are placed under general anesthesia for these types of surgeries, and we ensure patients are medically optimized for surgery. Recovery may vary depending on the type of surgery performed. We encourage movement and walking around the house even on the day of surgery. Most patients can shower 48 hours after surgery. The use of compression and support garments are generally encouraged in the postoperative period. Drains may or may not be used depending on the procedure. We ensure you are fully prepared prior to surgery and know what to expect post-operation.
