Overview

For many transgender individuals, chest dysphoria can cause significant distress and discomfort, making it difficult to feel comfortable in their own body. Feelings of dysphoria  can negatively impact mental health and overall well-being. Chest surgery (also known as “top surgery”) can help alleviate generalized dissatisfaction and improve an individual's quality of life by allowing them to feel more comfortable and confident in their body.

Consultation

The Plastic Surgery Center offers gender-affirming chest procedure consultations at all of our locations. It's important to note that not all transgender individuals choose to undergo chest surgery as part of their gender affirmation journey. Each person's transition is unique and should be guided by their own individual needs and desires. During the consultation your surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your medical history, chest, skin quality, and ongoing transition goals before recommending a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Questions
about this procedure?

What to Expect

Gender-affirming chest procedures are performed under general anesthesia. The surgeries last three to five hours, and you may need to stay at the hospital overnight. You may have a surgical drain and bandages, compression wraps, and gauze covering your incisions following the procedure. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to care for them.

Your doctor will discuss any limitations in activity you'll have in the weeks following the surgery. Patients are advised not to lift their arms above shoulder height or lift anything greater than five pounds for the first two to four weeks. Most people can resume regular activities within 10 to 14 days, but should avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks.

Recovery &
Results

Final results and healing may take a few months, but bruising and swelling should resolve within one to three weeks. Temporary numbness and loss of breast or nipple sensation may last up to one year.

To maximize both recovery and results, closely follow your surgeon’s directions and attend follow-up appointments.
