Enhance Your Weight Loss Journey:
A Guide to
Post Bariatric Surgery
Overview
Summary
Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery Procedures
Lower body lift surgery is the most common follow-up procedure for our patients who have completed weight loss surgery. During a body lift procedure, a large section of excess skin is removed from the midsection (front and back) by creating two parallel incisions, like a belt, around the abdomen and above the buttocks.
Sagging skin under your arms, between the armpit and elbow, can be removed during an arm lift procedure, also known as brachioplasty. There is no way to completely prevent visible scars during arm lift surgery, though our highly-skilled surgeons use the most advanced techniques to reduce scarring. Over time scars will lighten and become less noticeable.
A breast lift, or mastopexy surgery, creates a firmer, natural-looking breast silhouette while rejuvenating your body confidence and self-esteem. Using the most advanced techniques to minimize visible scarring, our expert surgeons will raise and reshape your breasts, removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to support your new breast contour.
Thigh lift surgery is the standard approach to tightening loose skin on the upper legs following weight loss surgery. An outer thigh lift involves creating a curved back-to-front incision at the top of the thigh, and a medial thigh lift involves a smaller incision along the groin. Both methods allow our skilled surgeons to carefully reshape the contour of your thighs and upper leg and remove excess skin.
Sagging skin around your face and neck can be especially troubling if you have undergone successful weight loss surgery. While other areas of the body can be hidden with clothing, a "droopy" face or "turkey neck" can substantially impact your body image and self-esteem. Facelift surgery can resolve sagging face and neck skin through careful incisions along the hairline and around the ear. After removing excess skin and tissue, we can also reshape and contour underlying tissue to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Candidate for Post Bariatric Surgery?
If you had bariatric weight loss surgery (gastric bypass or lap band surgery) and have reached your target weight, post bariatric surgery could be the next step toward achieving your healthiest life. We suggest waiting until you've maintained your weight loss for at least six months before considering post bariatric body contour surgery. Being in general good health, mentally and physically, and being a non-smoker is also essential to achieving the best long-term results.
Consultation
Consultations for post bariatric surgery or excess skin removal after weight loss surgery are available at all Plastic Surgery Center locations. The best surgical plan for you will depend on various personal and medical factors. With this in mind, our world-class surgeons will review your medical history and discuss your ideal surgical outcomes to make personalized recommendations. We can also provide simulated images of your desired results with computer-assisted technology.

What to Expect
Depending on your specific procedure or procedures, our expert staff and physicians will provide detailed information about what you can expect before, during, and after each phase of post bariatric surgery. Your surgeon will consider your health history, the amount of skin and fat tissue involved, existing scar tissue, and any previous or complementary procedures you want to have done to determine our best corrective recommendations.
Typically, our surgeons close incisions with buried, dissolvable stitches, reducing visible scars and increasing patient comfort. Small drain tubes may be placed to allow excess fluid that builds up where fat tissue was removed during surgery. Your recovery time will depend on the specific procedure performed, and your doctor will provide specific instructions on any physical limitations prior to your surgery.
Recovery &
Results
Results are visible almost immediately following post bariatric surgery, though it can take several months after each procedure to heal fully. Recovery times vary widely based on the extent of the procedure and each person's unique healing process. The surgery will take place under general anesthesia, and the first doses of pain management will likely be given intravenously. You may need to stay overnight for 1-2 days.
Most patients undergoing post bariatric surgery can expect to return to regular activity within 4-6 weeks after each procedure. Ice and over-the-counter medication can help manage swelling and pain during the first 24-48 hours. Depending on the body area and the extent of incisions and skin removal, discharge instructions will be provided for each recovery phase.
You may be sent home with surgical drain tubes in place, which can be uncomfortable. Proper care of the drain tubes will be explained before discharge and removed in the office during one of your post-operative visits. Over the next 1-3 weeks, soreness can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.
