Achieve a Flatter Stomach:
Tummy Tuck Procedure Explained
Overview
Summary
Types of Tummy Tuck Treatments
A traditional, or full tummy tuck procedure requires a horizontally-oriented incision on your lower stomach (between the pubic hairline and navel) and a small circular cut around the belly button. The shape and length of the horizontal incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary.
A mini tummy tuck is often recommended for patients who do not have a lot of excess skin to be removed. This involves a big 4-8 inch incision above the pubic bone, similar to the size and location of a C-section scar. If you've had a C-section previously, the same incision can be used, though a mini tummy tuck incision might be slightly longer.
Liposuction-only tummy tuck surgery is a fat-removal procedure (through suction) that significantly reduces the "pouch" of a lower belly without the recovery time and surgical scarring associated with traditional tummy tuck surgery. The natural shape of your lower abdomen does not change during this surgery, but it can result in a visibly flatter, firmer appearance. Liposuction can also remove fat tissue from the thighs and hips and is often done as part of traditional tummy tuck surgery.
Candidate for a Tummy Tuck in New Jersey?
A tummy tuck is not intended as a weight loss procedure but can help return a natural, firmer appearance to your midsection. If you have sagging or excess skin and fatty tissue around your lower stomach, a significantly protruding abdomen, or weakened or separated abdominal muscles, you may be a candidate for tummy tuck surgery. You should also be a non-smoker in general good health, physically and mentally. The ideal candidates for a tummy tuck should be at, or near, their target body weight prior to surgery.

What to Expect
Depending on your recommended surgical approach and desired outcome, our expert staff and physicians will provide detailed information about what you can expect before, during, and after tummy tuck surgery.
Your surgeon will consider your health history, the amount of skin and fat tissue involved, existing scar tissue, and any previous or complementary procedures you want to have done to determine our best corrective recommendations.
Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will carefully repair separated muscles, reshape the lower abdomen, and remove excess skin. Sometimes, they perform liposuction in the hips or thighs during tummy tucks to create a more balanced final result.
Typically, our surgeons close incisions with buried, dissolvable stitches, reducing visible scars and increasing patient comfort. Small drain tubes may be placed to allow excess fluid that builds up where fat tissue was removed during surgery.
Recovery &
Results
Our expert physicians often perform a combination of procedures to achieve ideal results during a tummy tuck surgery. Recovery times vary widely based on the extent of the procedure and each person's unique healing process. Most patients undergoing tummy tuck surgery can expect to return to regular activity within 1-3 weeks.
You should ask someone to drive you home and assist with personal care tasks for the first couple of days. Pain and swelling are typically highest for 2-3 days following surgery. Prescription medication may be prescribed. Ice and over-the-counter medication can help manage swelling and pain during the first 24-48 hours.
You may be sent home with surgical drain tubes in place, which can be uncomfortable. Proper care of the drain tubes will be explained before discharge, and they will be removed in the office during one of your post-operative visits. Over the next 1-3 weeks, soreness can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.

Because a tummy tuck is considered a cosmetic procedure, most insurance providers will not cover the cost of surgery. Coverage may be available in some cases, such as following bariatric surgery or other corrective procedures. Benefits vary according to the individual policy and the patient's circumstances and may require pre-authorization.
